Courmayeur lies on the far side of the massif, in the Aosta Valley: 110 km from Geneva via Chamonix and the Mont Blanc tunnel. The drive crosses three countries in under two hours and comes out on the Italian side of the summit.

As a rule yes, but it is subject to scheduled closures for maintenance, sometimes lasting several weeks. We check the tunnel's status before every journey on this axis: when it is closed, the fallback route runs via the Grand-Saint-Bernard and lengthens the trip appreciably.
France and Italy both belong to the Schengen Area, so there is no systematic check at the tunnel. Spot checks remain possible: keep valid ID within reach.
