Zug and its lake

Zug is half an hour from Zurich Airport, entirely by motorway. That makes it the most predictable loop on our list: it takes the same at eight in the morning as at two in the afternoon, which none of the loops crossing Zurich can promise.

The old town is small and walks in an hour. The Zytturm, 52 metres, built in the 13th century, is its emblem: its faces give the time, but also the days, the months, the moon's position and the leap years.

The loop runs 98 kilometres for an hour twenty-five of driving out of four. We drive and we wait.

The itinerary

  1. L'autoroute, et rien d'autre

Half an hour from the airport, entirely on motorway. It is the most predictable loop on the list: the duration barely varies with the hour, unlike those crossing Zurich.

  2. La Zytturm

The clock tower, 52 metres, built in the 13th century: the town's emblem. Its faces do not show only the time — for those who can read them, they also give the days, the months, the moon's position and the leap years.

  3. La vieille ville

Cobbled lanes and houses many of which are five hundred years old. The whole is small and walks in an hour, which is exactly what a half-day allows.

  4. La rive du lac

Lake Zug borders the old town. You take a coffee facing the water, possibly with a slice of Zug cherry cake, and you set off again. 98 kilometres in all.

km included : 100 km

The kilometres below are measured from the airport. Starting from a hotel in town, or from another town, changes the loop and therefore the count: the quote is adjusted to your actual pickup point.

The outing that fits a window

A meeting ending at eleven, a flight at six: Zug fills exactly that gap. The entirely motorway approach makes the return calculable, which is what you ask of a half-day wedged between two obligations.

Small, and that is the point

The old town walks in an hour without missing anything. Over four hours, time remains for the lake and a coffee, instead of chasing an overloaded programme.

Drivable all year

Motorway and cobbled streets, no relief. The loop works in any weather, which is not true of the Rigi or the Rhine Falls in midwinter.
