The Uetliberg tops out at 869 metres and is the highest point around Zurich. From the tower platform, the city, the lake and the Alps sit in a single view. That is where this half-day starts, and not by accident.
Then you come down: the Lindenhof, on the site of the Roman castrum and later the Carolingian imperial palace, the old town, the Bahnhofstrasse and the quays. The loop runs 43 kilometres for three quarters of an hour of driving out of four.
We drive and we wait. It is the loop on our list that leaves the most time on the ground: over three hours.
The itinerary
L'Uetliberg
Zurich's own mountain, 869 metres, the highest point around. From the tower platform you take in the city, the lake and the Alps at once. It is the stop that gives you the geography before going down into town.
Le Lindenhof
The terrace above the Limmat, on the site of the Roman castrum and later the Carolingian imperial palace. It is the viewpoint over the old town, and the one place in the centre where you see where the city came from.
La Bahnhofstrasse et les quais
From the station down to the lake. The chauffeur drops at the top and collects at the bottom, which saves walking the whole street back to find the car.
Retour, quarante-trois kilomètres
The full loop runs 43 kilometres for three quarters of an hour of driving out of the four hours. It is the best ratio on our whole list: over three hours on the ground.

Go up first
The Uetliberg before the city, not after. You take in the geography from height, and the old town then reads itself. The other way round, the climb becomes a chore at the end of the half-day.
The Bahnhofstrasse the right way
It is walked downhill, from the station to the lake. With a chauffeur you are dropped at the top and collected at the bottom: you do not walk the street back to find the car, which is exactly what you do when you have parked.

The view from the Uetliberg is worth nothing under cloud. If the ceiling is low in the morning, we tell you and suggest starting with the city, going up at the end of the day if it clears.
