The Best Day Trips in Switzerland with a Private Chauffeur

Published on 8 min read

No country rewards the day trip quite like Switzerland. Distances are short, the roads are flawless, and the scenery shifts with every pass. The only real obstacle is logistical: choosing the right route, parking in villages that fill up by mid-morning, and not spending the day checking timetables.

A private chauffeur removes that friction. You leave when you want, stop where the view deserves it, and return in the evening without touching a wheel. Here are five of our favourite day trips, grouped by region, with indicative drive times and the right vehicle for each.

Lavaux and Montreux: terraced vineyards and the Riviera

From Geneva or Lausanne, the Lake Geneva arc offers one of the country's most beautiful drives. You follow the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces, with a tasting stop at a local winemaker, before reaching Montreux and the unmissable Château de Chillon. The day ends naturally on the flower-lined lakeside promenade.

This is the ideal first taste of French-speaking Switzerland: gentle, panoramic and punctuated by good food. The pace stays slow, which makes it a favourite with couples and leisure travellers.

Lucerne and Mount Pilatus: central Switzerland in a day

From Zurich, Lucerne is under an hour away. The old town, the Chapel Bridge and Lake Lucerne form a classic tableau, extended by the ascent of Mount Pilatus — by cable car or on the world's steepest cogwheel railway. A lake cruise rounds the day off perfectly.

This trip concentrates the essence of central Switzerland into a comfortable format, with no race against the clock, the chauffeur handling every transfer between stops.

Zermatt and the Matterhorn: high mountains, no effort

More ambitious, the day to Zermatt rewards you with the most photographed mountain in the Alps. As the village is car-free, your chauffeur drops you at Täsch, the last point reachable by road, from where the final leg continues to the centre. The Gornergrat delivers the face-to-face with the Matterhorn; lunch at altitude is a moment apart.

Doable in a day from Geneva, Lausanne or Sion, this trip needs an early start. To enjoy it fully, many clients fold it into a two-day programme instead.

Rhine Falls: Europe's largest waterfall

North of Zurich, near Schaffhausen, the Rhine Falls unfurl the most powerful curtain of water in Europe. A half-day excursion is enough: a boat approach to the central rock, panoramic viewpoints and, in season, an extension to the region's wine villages or the medieval old town of Stein am Rhein.

Lake Lugano and Mount Brè: an Italian interlude

For those with a full day, Ticino offers a complete change of scene: palm trees, a Mediterranean-blue lake and an Italian art of living. From Zurich or Lucerne, you cross the Gotthard to reach Lugano, its lake and the Mount Brè funicular, one of Switzerland's finest viewpoints. A longer day, best kept for the warm season.

Which vehicle, for whom?

The choice of vehicle depends on the number of passengers and the register of the day. A day trip is most often booked as an hourly disposal, with the chauffeur staying with you between every stop — the model set out in our hourly hire service.

  • Couple or solo traveller: E-Class for ease, S-Class for prestige.
  • Family or small group (4–7): V-Class van, space and luggage.
  • Group with bulky equipment: Sprinter.
  • A day's rate is built bespoke and remains an estimate to confirm by vehicle, route and season.
